COLLECTION POLICY:
The mission of the Carnegie Branch
Library for Local History is to collect, protect, and make available for
research materials relating to the history of Colorado with a special
emphasis on Boulder County. The Carnegie is a reference library and no
materials circulate.
Types of
Programs Supported by the Collection
- Research
The primary program of the Carnegie is to further historical
research by collecting and preserving research materials and
describing them in a MARC/AMC (machine readable cataloging,
archives and manuscript control) database that will allow ready
state-wide access.
- Outreach
Manuscript materials and photographs are used in preparing and
presenting outreach programs including slide presentations,
lecture series, workshops, and tours.
- Exhibits
Materials are exhibited in display cases at the Carnegie.
Special exhibits are prepared by Carnegie staff for short-term
display at institutions whose exhibit policies meet the
Carnegie's high standards in regards to security, light control,
and temperature control.
- Publications
The Carnegie, in order to further its collection development,
will publish public relations and donor information brochures.
Articles will be published in the library newsletter and other
publications. Proposals regarding the editing and publication of
manuscripts will be reviewed individually.

Clientele Served by
the Collection
Under supervision of library staff, the
collection will be made available to historians, writers, scholars,
genealogists, and members of the general public who are engaged in serious
research.

Priorities and
Limitations of Holdings
- Geographical areas covered.
The Carnegie collects materials relating to Colorado with a
special emphasis on Boulder County. Manuscripts pertaining to
the history of other geographical areas are not sought.
- Languages, other than
English, acquired.
Materials will be accepted in any language.
- Forms of material, other than
manuscripts, acquired.
In addition to manuscripts, the Carnegie accepts photographs,
maps, microforms, oral history tapes, dated newspaper clippings,
scrapbooks, ephemera, books, pamphlets, monographs, and serials.
- Exclusions
The Carnegie will not accept restricted collections and will not
collect duplicates of materials in our holdings; undated and
unidentified photographs of people; newspapers available on
microfilm; or books by Boulder authors that are outside the
scope of our collection policy.
Statement
of Reappraisal and Deaccessioning Policy
Materials
already in the collection which do not reflect the collecting areas
of the Carnegie may be deaccessioned and offered to other more
appropriate institutions or to the donor depending upon the
requirements in the donor agreement.
